With the Stanley Cup Finals between the Chicago Blackhawks and Tampa Bay Lightning currently bringing in record ratings, Hollywood has decided to hit the ice once again. Entertainment One has announced they will make a sequel to the 2011 indie sports movie Goon, per a report by Deadline.
They also announced that Wyatt Russell (22 Jump Street) and Elisha Cuthbert (Just Before I Go) will be joining the original cast that includes Sean William Scott (Role Models), Liev Schreiber (Pawn Sacrifice), Jay Baruchel (This is the End), and Alison Pill (Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World). Baruchel co-wrote the first movie and will co-write and direct the sequel.
The original movie followed bouncer Doug “The Thug” Glatt (Scott), as he is hired by the local minor league hockey team as a goon – a player used to get in fights with opposing players in order to send a message to the other team. This led to a face-off against opposing veteran goon Ross Rhea (Schreiber).
Russell played professional hockey in Canada and Europe before taking up acting. He will play a young hotshot who becomes the team captain of the Halifax Highlanders after a pro lockout sends a bunch of pros back to the minors. Cuthbert will play Eva, the sister of Pill’s character.
The sports sequel is currently in pre-production with no set release date.
