Three-time Academy Award nominee Woody Harrelson is set to headline Summer of Roses, a suspense drama directed by Rick Alverson (The Mountain, The Comedy).
Co-written by Alverson and Micah Jayne, the film follows Thomas (Harrelson), an affluent American expatriate spiraling through an intoxicated, psychological freefall while residing abroad. The project reunites Harrelson with his Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri co-star Caleb Landry Jones, with Hannah Gross (The Drama, Mindhunter) and Kaya Wilkins (Thelma/recording artist Okay Kaya) rounding out the principal cast.
Principal photography is slated to begin next month on location in Sicily. Benjamin Loeb and Magnus Castracane of Small Problems are producing alongside Tyler Davidson and Drew Sykes of Low Spark Films, Marco Alessi and Massimiliano Navarra of Dugong Films, Nick Grau, John Gray, and Derrick Tseng. Katie Sanders serves as co-producer, while Alverson’s Made Bed and Harrelson and Ilya Bronchtein’s Children at Play banner will executive produce. Low Spark Films is financing the production in partnership with new-land and Gray’s It’s Not Pork. WME Independent represents worldwide rights.
The project adds to an active slate for Harrelson, who next stars opposite Matthew McConaughey in the Apple TV+ comedy series Brothers, debuting on September 23. His upcoming feature credits also include Quentin Dupieux’s Full Phil alongside Kristen Stewart, as well as Jason Bateman’s Netflix crime feature The Cackling of the Dodos, in which he stars opposite Sam Rockwell.
Summer of Roses marks Alverson’s return to narrative features following 2018’s The Mountain, which starred Jeff Goldblum and Tye Sheridan and competed for the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival.
