The Timothee Chalamet led Wonka is on a steady course to its mid-December release. Recent box office trackings have it lined up to have a Christmas weekend of pure imagination at the box office.
Wonka is set as a prequel to Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory and follows Willy Wonka, played by Chalamet, in the days before his chocolate factory.
For its opening weekend, Wonka is on track to pull in between $35 and $40 million but with plenty of room to grow moving into Christmas weekend. The opening gross currently estimated is significantly higher than what it was initially, according to ComicBook.com.
Tracking at this stage in the game places Wonka as a big hit with female audiences, both over and under 25. Tracking for unaided awareness of the film is equally as impressive, currently looking better than that of other holiday releases like Trolls Band Together or Mary Poppins Returns.
Mary Poppins Returns opened in December of 2018, with a projection of about $50 million in its first weekend, but was quickly dethroned by Aquaman, which went on to crack a billion dollars. Similarly, competing with Wonka this year is Aquaman’s sequel, Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom.
Also in the running during the holiday season at the box office will be a new animated feature from Illumination, Migration, and the new Michael Mann film Ferrari, with Adam Driver headlining.
