Fans hoping to see Timothée Chalamet back as Willy Wonka will have to wait a little longer. Wonka 2 has run into some scheduling problems, but the sequel is still in the works. A recent report from Screenrant pointed to Chalamet’s increasingly busy schedule as one of the main reasons the movie has yet to move into production. Since Wonka came out in 2023, the actor has stayed busy with several other projects, making it harder to find a window for the sequel.
Simon Farnaby, who co-wrote the first movie with director Paul King, later cleared up some confusion surrounding the reports. Farnaby took to social media to explain that he was not saying the sequel had been canceled or abandoned. He said Wonka 2 has a script, Warner Bros. is still behind the movie, and Chalamet wants to return as Wonka. The studio has also pushed back on reports that the sequel was delayed indefinitely. Warner Bros. said those reports were not accurate, adding that work on the movie is continuing.
That should come as a relief to fans who enjoyed the first film. Wonka was released in 2023 and became a major box office success, bringing in more than $630 million worldwide. Chalamet starred as a young Willy Wonka, with King directing and Farnaby helping write the screenplay. There is still no release date or confirmed start date for Wonka 2. Chalamet’s packed schedule could mean fans will have to wait before production gets underway, but there is no indication that the project is off the table.
For now, the sequel is simply taking its time to come together. Chalamet is still expected to return, and Warner Bros. remains committed to bringing another Wonka story to theaters.
