The COVID-19 has impacted the movie industry big time, with so many films being delayed or on hold. With the summer movie season on the horizon, many movies also potentially risk being affected, with one of the biggest delayed entries being Wonder Woman 1984. There have been many rumors on whether the film would delay its release date like how Disney delayed Black Widow, or if the film will go straight to streaming. Now Warner Bros has decided to go with its first option, as Wonder Woman 1984 has been delayed from June 5th 2020 to August 14th 2020.
Wonder Woman 1984 will now be replacing In the Heights’ release timeframe (which is now to be determined), which was initially Warner Bros’ big August release. There was a rumor that Wonder Woman could replace Tenet‘s release date but, as of this moment, the film is still set to come out in July. The decision to delay the film as opposed to streaming came from Warner Bros chairman Toby Emmerich, who said the film would be best experienced on the big screen. In a statement from Variety, Emmerich said “We hope the world will be in a safer and healthier place by then” in regards to the film being set for release in August now.”
As disappointing as it maybe for DC fans having the wait two months to see Gal Gadot play Diana Prince again, everyone is at least aware that this is for the safety of the world. Many are still being encouraged to stay at home, with theaters being closed for the foreseeable future until the coronavirus pandemic finally dies down. Though hopefully once theaters are up and running again, fans will be excited to witness the DC superhero sequel on the big screen the way it was meant to be seen.
