The Irish Film and TV Awards (IFTA) was held last night, honoring a multitude of films that western audiences may remember from this year’s Academy Awards, on top of multiple television programs which came out in 2022.
Banshees of Inisherin took home best film and best supporting actor and actress (Brendan Gleeson and Kerry Condon), all of which were nominated but lost out at the Oscars, for their respective categories. Other 2023 Academy Alumni include Austin Butler (best international actor, Elvis), Cate Blanchett (best international actress, Tár), All Quiet on the Western Front (best international film), among a plethora of others. Even Tom Cruise was given a nomination for best international actor, something which was heavily speculated he may receive at the Oscars for Top Gun: Maverick.
The television side of the awards saw Bad Sisters clean house, racking up a total of 4 out of the 7 categories that it was nominated for. It took best TV drama, director of a TV drama, and actress in a leading and supporting role for a TV drama, with Sharon Horgan winning for best actress. Apple TV+ is no longer a stranger to the awards circuit, bringing home the win for best film with Coda at the Academy Awards in 2021, and now winning for some of their television programs at the IFTAs, no doubt leading to an inevitable boost in their streaming numbers.
Plenty of other works were honored this year as well, and with the wins and nominations from the prestigious awards show, it’s no doubt that they are more than worth the time to seek out, and give a watch.
