There might just be some left for Triple Frontier. Previously, it was reported that Paramount had dropped the thriller – which was set to star Tom Hardy, Channing Tatum and recent Oscar winner Mahershala Ali – which centered on the perilous Paraguayan border zone. The risk of mounting an ambitious an expensive grown-up prestige picture may have been the reason for Paramount’s hesitation, but hope may be coming from streaming service giant Netflix.
Deadline reported that talks are currently underway to revive the project with few interested parties, but Netflix’s participation may well be the most stable. If a deal gets worked out, the project may be looking to court Ben Affleck and Casey Affleck as the film’s leads; Ali appears still in the mix. J.C. Chandor, the rising director of All is Lost, A Most Violent Year and Margin Call (which he also scripted and which earned him Best Original Screenplay Oscar nomination), appears still in contention to helm the project from a screenplay penned by Oscar winner Mark Boal (The Hurt Locker, Zero Dark Thirty). Charles Roven would produce.
Before it’s unexpected drop from Paramount, Triple Frontier was nearing to start shooting. The long-gestating project generated interest from august talent like director Kathryn Bigelow and actors Tom Hanks, Will Smith and Johnny Depp before Hardy and Tatum boarded the project. While nothing is set at press time, if Netflix takes the rein of the project, filming could start at some point later this year – the streaming service would first settle the final stages of Triple Frontier departing from Paramount Pictures.
Casey Affleck earned an Oscar earlier this year for his lead role in Manchester by the Sea, while Ali picked up the Best Supporting Actor statue the same night for his turn in the Best Picture champ Moonlight.
