A somewhat magical “What If?” scenario can play our minds as we mourn the loss of legendary musician David Bowie: the icon may have had cameo in Marvel’s upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. We recently profiled Bowie’s (somewhat unsung) film career and an appearance in James Gunn’s retro-soundtracked intergalactic phenom might have made a nice fit for The Man Who Fell From Earth performer.
Director Gunn took to Facebook to pen a heartfelt eulogy to Bowie where he revealed that the late singer’s name was brought up for a cameo in the sequel to the 2014 blockbuster. Nothing was ever confirmed and the closely kept secret of Bowie’s failing health likely would have prevented an appearance anyway, but there were supposedly a small chance it may happened. Gunn, who before Guardians directed the horror film film Slither (2006) and the comedy Super (2011), spoke eloquently about his personal fondness for Bowie and his music.
The first Guardians featured Bowie’s classic “Moonage Daydream,” so an ideal way to pay tribute to the late icon may be to feature some more of his immortal songs in the sequel, something in which Gunn seemingly is toying with. In minor Vol. 2 spoilers, Gunn revealed that he’s tinkering with potentially placing another Ziggy Stardust tune and spilled that Bowie would be the only artist who appeared on both soundtracks. In many ways, the playlist for Vol. 2 may be even more anticipated than the film itself.
