Dwayne Johnson is preparing for the upcoming release of his holiday action flick Red One, which will be playing everywhere including IMAX screens. In a recent interview, the actor admitted that Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer is what convinced him that Red One needed to be seen on the biggest screen possible.
In his full quote he said, “With Red One, our intention was to make a movie that you can enjoy on the biggest screen possible. Legitimately the biggest screens possible are IMAX. I was midway through shooting Red One and I had an opportunity to see Oppenheimer. I watched in the IMAX theater where Christopher Nolan watches and screens his movies. Him and Emma [Thomas], his wife. I even asked to let me sit where Chris sits. They said, ‘Chris sits here.’ I watch Oppenheimer. It was amazing, but I was thinking: ‘Holy shit. Red One on this screen and with this technology could be game over.’ I remember texting [director Jake Kasdan] a picture of my bare chest and a picture of the screen and we realized how cool [IMAX] would be.”
Oppenheimer was a massive hit back in 2023, with it making nearly $1 billion, very impressive for an R-rated film. The film also raked in awards at the Oscars including wins for Christopher Nolan as best director, Cillian Murphy as best actor and of course Best Picture. Red One has received lackluster reviews so far, and many speculate that it will even be a financial profit for the studio. Despite it taking up the same screens as Oppenheimer did over a year ago, it seems unlikely that Red One will make the same kind of splash as that film.
Red One stars Dwayne Johnson, Chris Evans, J.K. Simmons and Lucy Liu and follows Santa’s personal bodyguard attempting to save Christmas after the big man is mysteriously kidnapped. The film is now playing in the U.S. everywhere, including IMAX theaters.
