The first trailer of Star Trek Beyond, the third installment in the Star Trek reboot series, has been released online prior to its official theatrical debut preceding this week’s opening of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
J.J. Abrams, who is director on the new Star Wars, is producer on these Star Trek films. He also directed both the 2009 Star Trek and the 2013 Star Trek Into Darkness. Upon first viewing of this trailer, fans may notice a slightly more present comedic tone surrounding the film as a whole. It also lacks an appearance of Idris Elba’s highly anticipated villain character.
While the plot has been kept a secret, it looks as though the crew’s ship, the Enterprise, has been destroyed and they may have become stranded on an alien planet where they are now enslaved. The film is directed by Fast & Furious franchise’s Justin Lin and features the return of Chris Pine (This Means War), Simon Pegg (Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation), Zachary Quinto (Hitman: Agent 47), Zoe Saldana (Avatar), John Cho (Harold and Kumar), Anton Yelchin (Fright Night), and Karl Urban (Dredd).
Star Trek Beyond hits theaters July 22, 2016.
