Open Road Films has released a trailer for the upcoming investigative journalism drama Spotlight. The movie follows the team of journalists at The Boston Globe who broke the child abuse scandal surrounding the Catholic Church. The Tom McCarthy (Win Win) film stars Rachel McAdams (State of Play), Liev Schreiber (Pawn Sacrifice), Mark Ruffalo (Foxcatcher), Michael Keaton (Birdman), John Slattery (Mad Men), Stanley Tucci (Beauty and the Beast), and Billy Crudup (The Stanford Prison Experiment).
The trailer highlights the difficulty the journalists at the Globe faced in breaking the story, particularly when it came to getting information from the victims as well as the political pressure they received from the Catholic Church and its attorneys.
With a November 6 release date, an all-star cast, and the fact that it’s based on a true story, it looks like Spotlight will be a prime contender come awards season. McCarthy also has a short but prestigious filmography that includes The Station Agent (2003), The Visitor (2007), and Win Win (2011). His most recent film, last year’s The Cobbler with Adam Sandler, was his first flop. This is easily his biggest project and most outwardly prestigious in terms of content.
