Warner Bros. achieved a major box office milestone this weekend as The Conjuring: Last Rites debuted with $83 million domestically and $187 million worldwide. The horror sequel’s success marked the studio’s seventh consecutive release to open above $40 million.

The streak began with A Minecraft Movie and continued with buzzy movies, Sinners, Final Destination: Bloodlines, F1: The Movie, Superman, and Weapons. Together, the films reflect a range of genres, franchises, and filmmakers.

Beyond opening weekend, each movie has gone on to earn significantly more. Top earner, Minecraft, made $957 million globally, Superman $613 million, Sinners $366 million, Final Destination: Bloodlines $307 million, and Weapons $251 million.

The box office performance of The Conjuring: Last Rites alone set records. With nine films, the Conjuring universe is now the highest-grossing horror franchise of all time. The film outperformed HamiltonCaught Stealing, and The Roses. Internationally, it became the largest overseas debut for a horror film.

Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group co-chiefs Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy certainly have lot to celebrate after the disappointing performances of Joker: Folie a DeuxMickey 17  and The Alto Knights. Coming up next, Warner Bros. will release Paul Thomas Anderson’s highly anticipated film One Battle After Another. The film requires $300 million to break even at the box office.
