According to Variety a third installment to the highly successful Sherlock Holmes franchise – both the two previous filmed brought in $500 million globally – is in the works with a writing team being set in place by Team Downey, Warner Bros., and Village Roadshow. The studios have selected writers that include Nicole Perlman (Gaurdians of the Galaxy), Justin Malen (Baywatch), Gary Whitta (Rogue One), Geneva Dworet-Robertson (Tomb Raider) and lastly, Kieran Fitzgeralnd (Snowden). Guy Ritchie (The Man from U.N.C.L.E.), who directed the first two films, is also set to return to the director’s chair.
Robert Downy Jr. (Iron Man) will star once again with Jude Law, who took the role of Watson in the first and second movies. Susan Downey is set to co-produce alongside Dan Lin, Joel Silver and Lionel Wigram.
Writer’s rooms have become a standard for television shows, but have only just began to seep through to film, with many studios hiring several writers to workshop tentpoles and ongoing film series. Hiring an entire team for one film, though, is a first. This may be the way (blockbuster) films are headed, as many scripts in the past have gone through re-writes and polishing from a variety of screenwriters. It seems the studio is trying to cut time and corners by hiring a writing team at the outset. And it is also entirely possible that Team Downey, Warner Bros., and Village Roadshow have a lot more planned for the franchise than we know.
Production begins in February of 2017.
