Warner Bros’ Judas and the Black Messiah will now be released in theaters and HBO Max on Feb. 12, 2021. The initial release date was set for August 2020 but was postponed due to the pandemic. The historical drama stars Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out) and Lakeith Stanfield (Sorry to Bother You).
The film follows the life and assassination of Fred Hampton, the Illinois Black Panther Party Chairman who was betrayed by FBI informant William O’Neal.
A career thief, O’Neal (Stanfield), is in danger of exploiting both his comrades and his handler, Special Agent Roy Mitchell (Jesse Plemons). Hampton’s (Kaluuya) political talent is rising just as he falls in love with fellow revolutionary Deborah Johnson (Dominique Fishback). Meanwhile, O’Neal’s soul is in trouble. Will he be able to align himself with the forces of good? Or will he subdue Hampton and The Panthers by any means, under the order of FBI Director J.Edgar Hoover (Martin Sheen)?
Shaka King directed the film and wrote the story with Will Berson, based on a story by King, Berson, and brothers Kenny and Keith Lucas.
The film also stars Ashton Sanders (Moonlight), Algee Smith (The Hate U Give), Darrell Britt-Gibson (Just Mercy), Dominique Thorne (If Beale Street Could Talk), Amari Cheatom (Relaxer), Caleb Eberhardt (The Post), and Lil Rel Howery (Get Out).
