Father of the Bride reboot is in the works at Warner Bros with a more diverse and inclusive cast according to Collider. Matt Lopez will be writing the script for the latest reboot that will revolve around a Latino family, a first for the comedy franchise.
This reboot will be the third retelling of the comedy that first began with the Spencer Tracy original in 1950 and then went onto the recently made version by Disney in 1991 comedy starring Steve Martin, which produced a sequel in 1995.
Sources told Collider that Lopez was inspired by his own cross-cultural nuptials and the many epic Cuban weddings he has attended, some of which he is still recovering from.
Lopez has had plenty of experience when it comes to family films; he previously wrote for films like Bedtime Stories starring Adam Sandler, Race to Witch Mountain starring Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, and The Sorcerer’s Apprentice starring Nicolas Cage.
This new reboot is expected to be slightly different, more of a rom-com from its predecessors. Jesse Ehrman and Paul Perez, Warner Bros executives, will oversee the reboot on behalf of the studio.
Father of the Bride has been in recent news this week as Netflix assembled a reunion special that brought back the 1991 cast Martin, Kimberly Williams, George Newbern, Kieran Culkin, and Martin Short. It is to be directed by Nancy Meyers, she produced and co-wrote the 1991 movie directed by Charles Shyer.
