Warner Bros. Announces ‘The Bodyguard’ Remake, Written by Tony Nominee Matthew López

Variety reports that Matthew López, writer of the Tony-nominated play The Inheritance, has been brought on to write a reimagining of the iconic Whitney Houston film The Bodyguard at Warner Bros.

The 1992 romantic drama starred Houston and Kevin Costner. It grossed more than $400 million worldwide at the box office and critically has one of the bestselling movie soundtracks of all time. Several chart-topping original songs are coined from Houston herself.

As of now, the star couple of the remake has not been cast yet. Some duo ideas that were thrown into the mix include Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson, and Channing Tatum and Cardi B.

López’s The Inheritance premiered at London’s Young Vic in 2018, which, quoted by Variety, was hailed as “the most important American play of the century.” It later transferred to the West End later that year and opened on Broadway in 2019.

His off-Broadway work includes The Whipping Man and The Legend of Georgia McBride. He also wrote pieces such as Somewhere and Reverberation (Hartford Stage), The Sentinels (Headlong Theatre, London), and Zoey’s Perfect Wedding (Denver Center). López is currently co-writing the musical adaptation of Some Like It Hot.
