While there is plenty of buzz around the upcoming Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice, the Warner Bros./DC Comics cinematic universe is continuing to expand, and many are already looking as to what is coming next. This August sees the release of Suicide Squad, film that seems like the counterpart to Marvel‘s Guardians of the Galaxy. It centers around small group that consists of criminals, antiheroes, and just some downright crazy people. Will Smith (Bad Boys) looks to be leading the parade as Deadshot, along with Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall Street) as Harley Quinn and Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club) as The Joker.
As the anticipation grows around the film, so does the need and want for more of this type of odd, unconventional comic book film. According to writer-director David Ayer (Fury, End of Watch), there’s potential that the studio has already set its sights on at least one sequel. The Wrap reported that Ayer is attempting to get a crime film (that will also star Smith) made before the two return “for a planned Suicide Squad sequel in 2017.”
So it appears that Warner Bros. is hoping to get a sequel into production sooner rather than later. Depending on how Suicide Squad performs at the box office could change those plans, but with the major hype that this film has circling it right now – from the wild and rambunctious trailers to the much-awaited introductions of famous DC characters like Harley Quinn, and numerous others onto the big screen – it shouldn’t be too bold to say this one will probably do well enough to merit a sequel.
There’s still no word if the other actors will return for the possible sequel, but it’s more than likely that actors like Robbie and Leto may be called back. There’s also the recently announced appearance of Batman (Ben Affleck) in the story, although it seems that his role will be quite small.
