Thomas Pierce has a lot on his plate, as many of his New Yorker short stories are getting film adaptations. This includes two currently in the works at Simons Kinberg’s Genre Films, the first being a Netflix adaptation of Pierce’s Tardy Man for Netflix. The second, and most recently one, is Chairman Spaceman, which is now in development and currently has Pixar veteran director Andrew Stanton in talks to helm the project.
Chairman Spaceman takes place during the last few days of a corporate raider who signs up for an interplanetary mission to colonize the solar system. This adaptation will be written by Pierce himself, with Simon Kinberg and Audrey Chon producing the project.
Stanton is best known for the work at Pixar Animation studios where he has contributed to nearly every film the studio has to offer, the biggest contributions being his work on Finding Nemo and Wall-E. Other projects by Stanton outside of Pixar including the 2012 adaptation of John Carter and episodes of various TV shows including Stranger Things and Better Call Saul.
Genre Films, who’s producing the film alongside Searchlight Pictures, has been working hard to develop new film projects for their ever growing studio. This includes a remake of The Dirty Dozen from David Ayer and Kinberg’s own script, Here Comes the Flood, which was recently picked up by Netflix. Chairman Spaceman seems like another promising project from Genre Films to make. Plus, with two-time Academy Award winner Andrew Stanton potentially directing, this makes the final product even more intriguing.
