Both Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman are set to appear in an upcoming new spin on War of the Roses. The new take will simply be called The Roses.
The War Of The Roses hit the big screen in 1989, coming from director Danny DeVito. DeVito, who also starred in the movie, is most well known for his plethora of roles in comedy movies and TV shows. It was written by Michael Lesson, with the inspiration coming from Warren Adler’s original novel.
The roles that Cumberbatch and Colman take on in The Roses were originally played by Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner. The two play a couple pitted against each other while going through a divorce, doing whatever it takes to get the best out of it, and trying to leave the other in the dust.
As Hollywood Reporter states, Jay Roach who also shares a background in comedic films, like DeVito, is stepping in to direct the film. Some of Roach’s most well known directorial efforts are the Austin Powers trilogy, while he also served as producer on Borat, Meet The Parents, and many others.
Coming on as writer is that of Oscar-nominated Poor Things, Tony McNamara. McNamara also handled the screenplay for Cruella and The Favourite.
Both Cumberbatch and Colman have had appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with Colman appearing in Secret Invasion, and Cumberbatch in the ongoing role of Doctor Strange. Colman also recently appeared in several episodes of The Crown and starred in The Favourite, with an Oscar winning performance.
