Steven Spielberg’s upcoming film loosely based on his own childhood has found the actor to portray the young filmmaker. Sources told Deadline that newcomer Gabriel LaBelle is in talks to play the young, ambitious filmmaker growing up in Arizona. Being cast in this untitled film for LaBelle marks his biggest role, having previously acted in films such as comedy/horror Dead Shack and sci-fi The Predator.
Previously announced Michelle Williams and Paul Dano would play a role inspired by Spielberg’s mom and dad, but fictional versions of his real parents. Seth Rogen has also been cast in the film and will play Spielberg’s favorite uncle. Spielberg will also participate in screenwriting duties co-writing the script with Tony Kushner because of how intimate the narrative is. It will be the first time since 2001’s A.I. that Spielberg will help with the writing portion of the film.
The closest fans have ever gotten to know about Spielberg’s past was in the 2017 HBO documentary Spielberg. However, the upcoming untitled film will be the first time Spielberg will provide true insight into his early years that wasn’t in the documentary. In Showtime’s upcoming series adaptation of American Gigolo, LaBelle is set to star as the younger version of Jon Bernthal.
The film will begin filming this summer and is expected to be released in 2022.
