Universal has been trying to reboot their popular monster properties into a shared cinematic universe for years, but this ‘Dark Universe’ flopped immensely with the critical and box office failure of 2017’s The Mummy. The Tom Cruise-led film’s failure led to a major change in the company’s strategy, canceling almost all of their plans in favor of individualized storytelling, with 2020’s The Invisible Man proving this strategy to work .Curiously enough, one of their most anticipated original plans, The Bride of Frankenstein, is still in development according to Collider.
Collider, in an interview with original Bride of Frankenstein screenwriter David Koepp, learned that he is still actively developing the script. Koepp said that he and Universal have utilized quarantine to revisit the project, claiming “That was one thing I did during quarantine – I brought back Bride of Frankenstein into a place where I kind of always wanted it to be. Universal was very gracious to let me try again. Because they had geared up and shut down famously in the Dark Universe…I have a version now and they have a version that we all really like. I think they’re talking to directors now.”
Universal’s original plans may have changed, but they are still very committed to bringing their classic monster characters back on screen. After the positive reception to their modernized The Invisible Man, there’s no reason not to think it can’t work.
