Universal, DreamWorks Announce Two New Animated Films to Release in 2021

According to Variety, Universal and DreamWorks Animation have just revealed that they have two new films planned for release in 2021.

One of the films, known unofficially as Spirit Riding Free, will be released theatrically on May 14, 2021. The film is based on a Netflix television series of the same name which was inspired by the 2002 film Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron. The television show follows a young girl and her bond with a stallion and the upcoming film will follow the same pair on a feature-length adventure. The 2002 film was primarily focused on the life of a wild young stallion who gets captured at a young age and, though he breaks free, must find a way back to his herd. The film went on to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.

The other film, which will replace the Universal-Blumhouse film Spooky Jack, is called The Bad Guys and will be released on September 17, 2021. The Bad Guys is based on a best-selling book series of the same name, written by Aaron Blabey, about two men who decide to be good after spending a good portion of their lives committing crime. The film was written by Etan Cohen and will be directed by feature film newbie Pierre Perifel.
