Unexpected Turn For Long-Gestating ‘The Dark Crystal’ Sequel

According to The Hollywood Reporter, after 30 years, the world of Thra will be revisited by graphic novel outlet Boom! Studios. They have announced a sequel of sorts to the Jim Henson (The Muppets) and Frank Oz fantasy cult favorite The Dark Crystal in the form of a 12-issue series titled The Power of the Dark Crystal and will be based on plans for a film follow-up that never materialized.

Adapted by British writer Si Spurrier and derived from an un-produced screenplay penned by David Odell, Annette Odell and Craig Pearce, The Power of the Dark Crystal will feature artwork by Kelly and Nichole Matthews; with the cover art coming from Eisner Award-winning Jae Lee and June Chung. The series, set decades after the events of the 1982 film, will center around Jen and Kira, who have become  distracted by the pressures of ruling Thra and no longer appear in tune with the needs of the people. This provokes a Fireling called Thurma to set out and steal a shard of the dark crystal in order to restore power to her land. This mission might restore the Skeksis.

The Power of the Dark Crystal No. 1 will be released digitally and in stores February 15, 2017 to celebrate the first film’s 35th anniversary. A question arises if a cinematic sequel is completely off the table for now.
