Paranormal Activity served up scares to audiences when it first released in 2007. The film spawned five sequels, the last of which came out in 2015. Now, after small break from the franchise, a reboot is in the works from Underwater director William Eubank and Blumhouse.
The film will be written by Happy Death Day filmmaker and Paranormal Activity writer Christopher Landon, who wrote the second, third and fourth installments in the series. Plot details are being kept secret, but the film is scheduled to release March 4, 2022.
Eubank’s last film, Underwater, released in January 2020. The sci-fi horror flick sported an all-star cast that included Kristen Stewart, Jessica Henwick, T.J. Miller, Vincent Cassel and John Gallagher Jr. Although the film earned mixed reviews, critics praised the film’s stylish direction.
The Paranormal Activity films have a history of success at the box office. The franchise has grossed a worldwide total of $890.3 million, and even the lowest-grossing film proved profitable earning almost $80 million with a budget of only $10 million.
Blumhouse’s production model, which consists of releasing small-budget titles to wide audiences, spawned with the first Paranormal Activity. That film was made on a shoestring budget of $15,000 and grossed $193 million worldwide.
