Last week, it was announced that Mike Mitchell, who just directed Trolls, will be replacing Rob Schrab as director for the upcoming The LEGO Movie sequel.
Chris McKay, as well as Rob Schrab were both originally signed on to direct, but because of the push-back on release date as well as creative differences, departed the project. The original writers/directors – Phil Lord and Christopher Miller – have already penned the script for Warner Bros., and the animation is currently in production.
Mitchell has previously directed animated features Shrek Forever After and Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked, as well as 2005 Disney live-action film Sky High. He has also directed many of the live action portions of SpongeBob Squarepants tv series and SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water. Aside from directing, he also has done voice work in films such as Shrek Forever After, Megamind, Puss in Boots, Penguins of Madagascar, and Kung Fu Panda 3. Initially trained in animation, as a young illustrator, Mitchell worked for directors such as Tim Burton and Spike Jonze.
Although originally expected this year, The LEGO Movie sequel is due out in February 2019.
