Tristar looks to be bringing an interesting true story of a fairly unknown piece of history to the big screen around the world. The company has announced the acquisition of worldwide rights to The Woman King, a new film starring Academy Award-winning actresses Viola Davis (Fences) and Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years A Slave).
The Woman King will touch on the true story of The Kingdom of Dahomey, one of the strongest and most influential West African states of the 18th-19th centuries. It will focus specifically on Nanisca (played by Davis), the leader of the all-female military unit called the Amazon and her daughter Nawi (played by Nyong’o) who fight against the ongoing threat of the French and surrounding warring tribes in order to bring peace to the kingdom. Their actions would lead to the unity of their nation.
The story definitely gains steam after the monumental success of Black Panther, especially because many believe that the female army in that film are heavily inspired by the Amazons of Dahomey. With such powerful leads on the cast, we can easily believe that the film will be a fun watch. There is currently no director tied to the film, but the script has been written by Maria Bello. We can expect a 2019 release, but no official announcement has been released.
