According to The Hollywood Reporter, transgender drama Three Generations (formerly titled About Ray) is back on track after being pulled from its release schedule 17 months ago. The Weinstein Co. had pulled the film just days before its originally scheduled opening in September 2015. The abrupt move was a head-scratcher, as the company had pursued the film eagerly and acquired the rights for $6 million at Cannes in May 2015. At the time, TWC sources said the film would get a release date later in 2015 to qualify for awards season, however the film has remained in limbo until now. Honoring the film’s contractually obligated theatrical release, TWC will roll out the film on May 19th.
Gaby Dellal (Angels Crest) directs the film, which stars Elle Fanning (Live By Night). Twice-Oscar nominated actress Naomi Watts (Allegiant) and Oscar-winning actress Susan Sarandon (Mothers and Daughters) are also in the cast. The story centers on a New York teenager (Fanning) and the process in transitioning from female to male as well as the reactions of her mother Maggie (Watts) and gay grandmother Dolly (Sarandon). Producers are Watts, Dorothy Berwin, Big Beach’s Marc Turtletaub and Peter Saraf.
Three Generations will face stiff competition as it opens against such wide releases as Alien: Covenant, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul and Everything, Everything.
