The second trailer for the comedic monster-movie Colossal takes more direct approach at showing audiences what the film will presumably feel like. In the first trailer, we observed the familiar tropes of a typical disaster/monster movie: air raid siren, terrified onlookers, a building destroyed by an enormous leg. However, as the trailer progresses we see that the film is meant to incorporate a fair amount of comedy. Gloria (Anne Hathaway), a young woman with a fondness for day drinking, eventually discovers that a giant monster has recently appeared in the middle of Seoul, and it’s somehow mimicking her every move. Yahoo! Movies got the trailer exclusive.
Trailer number two begins with light pop music and a hung-over Gloria having the story of her booze soaked life reiterated to her by an old friend named Oscar (Jason Sudeikis). Apparently the night before the two got wasted back in her hometown and bonded while reports of the monster played on the television. Gloria then has the same realization as she did in the first trailer and decides to let Oscar and two other buddies (played by Tim Blake Nelson and Austin Stowell) in on her secret.
After re-watching the new trailer we’ve found a couple of possible plot points that might exist within the movie. One is that the monster isn’t always present: Oscar says, “[The monster] appeared. Same place, exact same time.” This suggests that the monster either disappeared or ran off after its first bout of destruction. The second assumption is that Gloria has to fight another giant entity. Near the end of the trailer she’s seen rising up, fists ready, and looking like she’s ready to kick someone (or something’s) ass.
Studios and filmmakers enjoy announcing how their upcoming films break away from the safe and banal content that’s mass-produced too often nowadays. However, it’s increasingly rare to see these films live up to their hype. Colossal’s trailer and synopsis speak for themselves; this is a fresh and ambitious endeavor. Regardless of how well writer/director Nacho Vigalondo executes his vision, we appreciate a filmmaker who truly attempts to show audiences something new.
