Jem and The Holograms stars Aubrey Peeples (TV’s Nashville) as the leader of the band that originated from the eponymous 1980s cartoon. The story follows music executive Jerrica Benton who secretly moonlights as a famous rock-star named Jem – think this generation’s Josie and The Pussycats and the second-coming of Hannah Montana, with less comedy and more drama. The film aims to translate the ideas of staying true to yourself while juggling success in the social media age.
The rest of Jem’s band consists of Stefanie Scott (soon-to-be-seen in Insidious: Chapter 3) as her sister Kimber, Hayley Kiyoko (also in Insidious: Chapter 3) as Aja, and Aurora Perrineau (TV’s Chasing Life) as Shana. Ryan Guzman (The Boy Next Door), Juliette Lewis (Natural Born Killers), and Molly Ringwald (The Breakfast Club) round out the cast.
John Chu, the man behind Step Up 2 and 3, directed the film. He already has experience with ’80s cartoon adaptations after directing G.I. Joe: Retaliation, and with music-based films after directing the concert flicks Justin Bieber: Never Say Never and Justin Bieber: Believe (Bieber’s manager Scooter Braun is one of the executive producers as well).
Jem and the Holograms hits theaters October 23.
