Toronto Hotel to Rename Theater after Norman Jewison

The Hazelton Hotel in Toronto, Canada, announced that it will be changing the name of its screening room to pay tribute to Norman Jewison, the Oscar-winning Canadian director and producer. The Hazelton, which is popular among attendees of the Toronto Film Festival in part for its screening room and event space, opened in 2007.

“I am pleased to have this beautiful cinema at the Hazelton Hotel in Toronto named in my honor. There is nothing better than watching a film on the big screen! I’d like to thank everyone at the Hazelton Hotel for this generous tribute,” Norman Jewison, now 97, said in a statement.

Jewison’s most iconic films include Moonstruck, Jesus Christ Superstar, Fiddler on the Roof, and In the Heat of the Night. He helped establish Canadian cinema in Hollywood, and throughout his career, his films have received 46 Academy Award nominations and won 12 Awards.

All across Canada, tributes to Jewison are beginning to appear to thank him for his contribution to Canadian film. Producer/director Shawn Levy will receive the first Norman Jewison Career Achievement Award at the TIFF Tribute Awards during this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, which starts on Sept. 7.

The Norman Jewison Cinema is set to be revealed during a TIFF event. “We are honored to dedicate this one-of-a-kind cinema to such a distinguished filmmaker,” said Gaurav Dutta, the general manager of Hazelton.
