Last Saturday was the 58th Cinema Audio Society Awards, honoring the best in sound technology for film and television, and “Top Gun: Maverick” was the night’s big winner. The film, which won the Outstanding Achievement in Sound Mixing award, is eyeing a win for the Best Sound categories at the Oscars this Sunday.

“Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio”, “Moonage Daydream,” “Better Call Saul,” “Only Murders in the Building,” and “Obi-Wan Kenobi” were the other winners of the night.

The 2023 Career Achievement Award was awarded to Peter J. Devlin, a five-time Oscar-nominated production sound mixer whose credits include “Black Panther,” “Bullet Train,” and “Gone in 60 Seconds”. Alejandro González Iñárritu received the Filmmaker of the Year Award.

“There is magic in this organization created by sound mixers for sound mixers. Mentorship, community, and kindness are critical keystones to our success,” Karol Urban, CAS’s president, said about the importance of sound in film. “Tonight, our membership stands at just over 1,000, providing a greater diversity of experience and covering the globe in a larger international footprint than ever before. Together, we thrive through volunteerism, honoring our legends and ensuring a legacy for the future of our craft.”
