Top: Gun Maverick seems to be in a little bit of trouble. With Oscar nomination voting underway, Maverick still doesn’t have its potential sound nominees locked up in what has become a contentious process, multiple sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.

As of Thursday, January 12th, members of the Academy’s sound executive branch, which holds a meeting in December every year to vet the names submitted as contenders for the award, were still investigating which names should appear on the ballot for Top Gun; Maverick, if the blockbuster sequel makes it into the nominees.

According to The Hollywood Reporter “The impasse stems from the fact that two teams worked on the movie at different times… THR could not get clarity on the specifics of the impasse at press time. But this offers a glimpse into what can happen when multiple teams — whether sound or departments such as visual effects — work on a film.”

Branch members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences choose the nominees for the sound design award. Over the next several days, voters in various cities will view clips from the 10 shortlisted films in the category before they vote, which will become nominated for the award. The 2021 Academy Awards made history when the decision was made that the Oscar for sound editing and mixing was combined into a single award for the best sound. that may include up to six names: two supervising sound editors, one production sound mixer, and up to three re-recording mixers.

Joining Top Gun: Maverick on the shortlist for the sound category includes All Quiet On The Western Front, Avatar: The Way of Water, Babylon, The Batman, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Elvis, Everything Everywhere All at Once, Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio and Moonage Daydream.
