Top Gun: Maverick, the upcoming sequel to the 1980s classic action film, is definitely anticipating need for speed. Originally planned for release in June 26, Paramount has announced that the movie will fly forward two days to release on June 24. This gives the sequel a Wednesday jump on this summer’s blockbuster releases. It will be a busy week for movie theaters across the nation, with Lin Manuel Miranda-produced In The Heights releasing on Friday that week, also with the expectation of being a huge hit. Only time will tell if pushing the movie forward two days will succeed in this year’s summer box office
Tom Cruise reprises his role as Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, who will now be featured as an instructor of new recruits at the Navy flight school. Other cast members include Miles Teller, who will play the son of the original cast member Anthony Edwards’ Goose, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, Ed Harris, with Val Kilmer returning as Tom “Iceman” Kazansky.
Joseph Kosinski, who previously directed Oblivion with Tom Cruise, will also be helming Top Gun: Maverick, with the script penned by Ehren Kruger (Transformers), Eric Warren Singer (American Hustle), and Christopher McQuarrie (Mission: Impossible).
