Tom Cruise Says ‘Top Gun’ Sequel Will Start Filming “In the Next Year”

Tom Cruise made some news while appearing on London morning talk show, suggesting that a long-rumored sequel to his 80s hit Top Gun may finally be a go. The veteran action star said the film will start filming, “in the next year.” This follows a meeting that took place between Cruise and producer Jerry Bruckheimer last year, where the two reportedly discussed a second installment.

The original 1986 action film – directed by the late Tony Scott – helped catapult a young Cruise to movie stardom and since murmurs of a second entry have ebbed and flowed through the years. Cruise’s assertion makes sequel talk appear on the rise again. If plans come together, the film will be set up at Paramount (where Cruise has maintained a long relationship which includes his long running Mission: Impossible series), with Jerry Bruckheimer Films and Skydance involved. According to Cruise, ““It’s happening. It’s definitely happening.”

As of now, plot details have not been revealed nor has a director been confirmed.

Cruise, last seen on screen in Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, will soon be seen in Universal’s The Mummy, which is hoping to kick-off monster universe for the studio. Later this year, he will appear in Doug Liman’s American Made and he is currently at work on Mission: Impossible 6. He also may take part in a sequel to his 2014 cult hit Edge of Tomorrow.

We shall stay tuned.
