Toho Studios and North American distributor GKIDS have officially released the first teaser trailer and promotional poster for Godzilla Minus Zero, the highly anticipated direct sequel to the 2023 cinematic hit Godzilla Minus One. The upcoming kaiju feature is scheduled to premiere theatrically in Japan on November 3, 2026, coinciding with the historic franchise’s annual “Godzilla Day,” followed by a wide North American release on November 6, 2026.
Academy Award-winning filmmaker Takashi Yamazaki returns to serve as director, screenwriter, and visual effects supervisor for the project, with Shirogumi Inc. once again handling the digital VFX production. The new storyline jumps forward to 1949, two years after the conclusion of the previous film, as postwar Japan navigates its recovery. According to the studio’s official synopsis, a catastrophic new threat emerges that completely disrupts the nation’s hard-won peace.
The production brings back the core cast members from the original film, including Ryunosuke Kamiki as former kamikaze pilot Koichi Shikishima and Minami Hamabe as Noriko Shikishima. Returning supporting actors include Hidetaka Yoshioka as Kenji Noda, Yuki Yamada as Shiro Mizushima, Kuranosuke Sasaki as Seiji Akitsu, and Sakura Ando as Sumiko Ota. The sequel also introduces veteran actor Min Tanaka to the ensemble as Kanji Murakami, a military biologist dealing with wartime psychological trauma.
The original Godzilla Minus One was a major commercial and critical success, generating over $116 million at the worldwide box office against a modest $15 million production budget. It achieved a historic milestone recognition by winning the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects at the 96th Oscars, marking the first time a Japanese production won in that category. Godzilla Minus Zero marks the 39th installment in Toho’s long-running monster franchise. From a technical standpoint, the film sets a new industry milestone as the first Japanese feature production shot entirely using IMAX-certified digital cameras, optimized explicitly for large-format theatrical exhibition.
