Luca Guadagnino’s OpenAI CEO Sam Altman Biopic ‘Artificial’ Bypasses Fall Festival Circuit

Director Luca Guadagnino’s high-profile technological drama Artificial is expected to forgo a traditional rollout across the major autumn film festivals. The decision marks the latest unconventional development for the production, which stars Andrew Garfield as OpenAI Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman, following a highly publicized shift in its distribution rights.

The feature film recently transitioned to independent distributor Neon after being dropped from the release schedule at Amazon MGM Studios. The corporate departure coincided with Amazon finalizing a multi-billion-dollar partnership and a projected $50 billion cloud infrastructure investment with OpenAI. Sources indicate that Neon acquired global distribution rights to the completed film under a straight distribution agreement without paying an upfront minimum guarantee. Instead, the indie studio has committed to handling print and advertising expenditures, leaving Amazon to absorb the initial production costs while allowing creative stakeholders to retain prospective backend profit participations.

Despite initial speculation regarding high-profile festival premieres at venues such as Venice or Toronto, the filmmaking team and Neon have opted against a standard festival launch complete with red carpet events, press conferences, and promotional junkets. The streamlined strategy is intended to navigate the intense public discourse surrounding the film’s corporate subject matter, mirroring localized distribution approaches implemented for other politically sensitive or highly publicized independent features.

Based on an original screenplay by Saturday Night Live alumnus Simon Rich, Artificial dramatizes the volatile events of November 2023 surrounding the abrupt ouster and subsequent reinstatement of Altman as the head of OpenAI. The project explores the internal corporate conflicts and the broader geopolitical stakes defining the modern artificial intelligence landscape. The biographical feature features an ensemble cast that includes Monica Barbaro as former OpenAI Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati, alongside Yura Borisov, Mark Rylance, Ike Barinholtz, Jason Schwartzman, Zosia Mamet, Cooper Hoffman, Chris O’Dowd, and Billie Lourd. The film is produced by Guadagnino, Rich, Jennifer Fox, and Heyday Films’ David Heyman and Jeffrey Clifford.

Neon maintains plans to mount a theatrical release and subsequent awards campaign for the feature later this year.
