Todd McFarlane Receives Backing For New ‘Spawn’ Movie

Spawn has always been a comic book character with a rich backstory, known for being an extremely violent anti-hero. His last film, Spawn (1997), received horrible reviews, with a current aggregate score of 18% on Rotten Tomatoes. Todd McFarlane, the creator of Spawn, will try to revitalize the character’s film identity with a new film in the works, according to Variety.

Albert Simmons is a Force Recon Marine who defended the President from being killed. After joining the CIA and questioning his authority, he is killed on orders by one of his higher-ups, where he is sent to hell. He makes a deal with a demon named Malebolgia to return to the real world, where he is turned into Spawn. His new goal is provided to him by another demon and he proceeds to complete his goals.

Blumhouse Productions has picked up the film, with a strong repertoire of low-budget horror films under their belt, including Split and Get Out. We feel this will be a great pairing, since Spawn has been more of a horror-like superhero. It will also be interesting to see who will play the anti-hero, with a variety of different actors interested in the position, according to Todd McFarlane.
