Aside from exceeding expectations, this puts the latest Thor as the highest opening grosser for the Marvel series’ threequel. This puts Marvel’s total domestic box office take – spanning over 17 movies – at $5 billion.
UPDATE (11/3/17): Weekend opening numbers are now projected to surpass the originally estimated $104 million box office take. The new projection sets the film between $116-$118 million.
Marvel strikes again with another hot hit. Thor: Ragnarok, the newest film in both the Thor franchise and the MCU, has garnered around $14.5 million in Thursday previews, according to multiple sources. It has been predicted to have a $41 million gross today with a $104 million opening weekend domestically, standing firmly behind Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 as the 7th highest opening weekend gross for a Marvel film. It is impressive just how this threequel compares to other Marvel films in a variety of ways, including its rating, preview numbers, and other high-praising facts.
Currently, Thor: Ragnarok is tied as the highest rated Marvel film to date at 94% with Iron Man, which has had little competition since 2008. It was also one of the highest grossing previews for Marvel film, easily beating out its other fall counterparts including last year’s Doctor Strange ($9.4 million) and Thor: The Dark World ($7.1 million). It fell just short for the highest grossing for a preview, just below Spider-Man Homecoming ($15.4 million). The international market has been buzzing about the film, giving it a $109 million opening weekend in 50% of the market. Its current box office sits at around $164 million without worldwide release. It is set to release worldwide today, including China, and the numbers show that by the end of the weekend, Thor: Ragnarok could make somewhere over $400 million worldwide.
The film stars Chris Hemsworth again as the titular character who has been captured and forced to fight in a gladiatorial arena with his old friend and Avenger the Hulk. Thor must find a way to escape the deadly arena and defeat the god Hela before she destroys Asgard. The film also stars series favorites Loki (Tom Hiddleston), Heimdall (Idris Elba), and Odin (Anthony Hopkins), as well as newcomers and other Marvel characters including Hela (Cate Blanchett), the Grandmaster (Jeff Goldblum), Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), and the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo).
