

The Wedding Banquet is an upcoming romantic-comedy film directed by Andrew Ahn and is slated for a wide release on August 18, 2025. The film is a remake of the 1993 Taiwanese picture of the same name directed by Ang Lee, and it stars Lily Gladstone, Bowen Yang, Kelly Marie Tran, Han Gi-Chan, and Oscar winner Youn Yuh-Jung.
The movie’s plot concerns two homosexual couples, one male couple and one female couple. One of the males, named Min (played by Han Gi-Chan), proposes to one of the females, named Angela (played by Kelly Marie-Tran). This sudden proposal is because Min’s student visa is set to expire and marrying Angela will supply him with a green card. Angela’s benefits because Min will pay for her IVF procedure with her partner Lee (played by Lily Gladstone).
Andrew Ahn is an American filmmaker of Korean origin, who is known for his most recent release, Fire Island, which recently premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 27, 2025. Ahn was recently interviewed by Variety prior to Fire Island’s premier, and stated,
Times have changed since 1993 for queer people. There was a new version of the story we could tell. We can get married. Now that we can get married, should we? Do we want to? As a millennial, there’s this burden of choice. It shifts the generational focus, and it’s looking toward the future.
