The Screen Actors Guild Awards honor the best performers in film and TV each year, and this year the top award for film went to Aaron Sorkin’s The Trial of the Chicago 7. The film won the top spot for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, and the award was accepted (via video call) by stars Eddie Redmayne, Sacha Baron Cohen, Michael Keaton, Frank Langella, Alex Sharp, John Caroll Lynch, Mark Rylance, and Kelvin Harrison Jr.
This boosts the film’s odds in nabbing the Oscar for Best Picture, with Chloe Zhao’s Nomadland being one of the stronger fellow contenders for the award after its Golden Globe win for Best Drama. This win for Trial also marks the first win in history of the top award of the night for streaming service, in this case Netflix.
Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, another Netflix release, also took home two major awards with Outstanding Performances by a Leading Actor and Leading Actress going to Chadwick Boseman and Viola Davis, respectively.
Other winners include Daniel Kaluuya in Judas and the Black Messiah for Best Supporting Actor, Yuh-Jung Youn in Minari for Supporting Actress, and Wonder Woman 1984 for Stunt Ensemble.
Awards season is in full swing, and we eagerly anticipate the grand finale, the Academy Awards, which air later this month on April 25.
