Did you watch the first trailer for Judd Apatow’s upcoming romantic comedy Trainwreck, but felt it was altogether too modest? Well never fear, for Universal has just released an all new red band trailer for the movie – and it doesn’t hold back.
Written by Amy Schumer, who also plays lead role Amy (aptly named), Trainwreck observes the life of a career woman and chronic singleton who struggles to confront her fear of commitment once she meets good guy Aaron (played by SNL alum Bill Hader).
Schumer, who had her comedic debut in her 2013 Comedy Central show Inside Amy Schumer, is no stranger to the dirtier side of comedy; in fact, her sitcom’s primary objective was to magnify her bawdy and bold sexuality. In a 2014 interview with Elle, Schumer explains her perspective as one of the few raunchy female comedians advertised on primetime television:
Now that I have a TV show and my profile is higher than it used to be, I feel a responsibility to that to represent myself and women in a truthful way…It became a conscious decision, that goal of being unapologetic and speaking about sex and just what it’s like being a woman.
Trainwreck clearly supports this frame of mind, placing a “pretty-ish”, “approachable”, and overall realistic woman in the romantic spotlight. “[The movie’s] about me,” Schumer states, aware of the messages media sends about body image and self-worth. “We put enormous pressure on ourselves and hold ourselves to this unrealistic standard.”
As for Apatow (The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Pineapple Express), whose most recent work has been in the producer’s chair for R-Rated, female-driven comedy hits like Bridesmaids and HBO’s Girls, he seems more than comfortable working alongside Schumer. “She’s insanely funny, and she has stories to tell…we both appreciate brutally honest comedy,” says Apatow.
Co-star Hader (Forgetting Sarah Marshall, The Skeleton Twins), a veteran actor in Apatow’s repertoire, agrees that Schumer and Apatow make a compatible pair. “Judd’s interested in comedy and sadness and people self-sabotaging and the messiness of life,” Hader explains, “and Amy is interested in the same.”
Trainwreck is due in theaters on July 17th, and features an unexpected cast of stellar talent, including Tilda Swinton (Moonrise Kingdom, Snowpiercer) and Brie Larson (21 Jumpstreet, The Gambler). Other big names are on the roster as well, with athlete LeBron James taking on supporting role, and actors including (but not limited to) Daniel Radcliffe and Marisa Tomei slated to make cameos.
