‘The Revenant’ Wins Top Prize at BAFTA Awards

Winners for the 69th EE British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA) were announced in London today potentially foreshadowing what results may occur at the upcoming Academy Awards. In highly contentious season, where three films (The Big ShortSpotlightThe Revenant) seem equally viable as Best Picture possibilities, BAFTA fell pretty hard to the sway of Alejandro González Iñárritu’s sweeping epic The Revenant, which took home five prizes including Best Film, Best Director and Best Actor for the highly expected Oscar frontrunner Leonardo DiCaprio (BAFTA couldn’t resist Titanic reunion as Kate Winslet picked up a prize for her work in Steve Jobs).

While The Revenant scored the most, George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road had solid showing, garnering four technical prizes. Steven Spielberg’s Cold War drama Bridge of Spies (also nominated at the Oscars for Best Picture) and Todd Haynes‘ romantic drama Carol led the BAFTA nominations with nine apiece and both went home empty-handed with the exception of Mark Rylance’s supporting victory in Bridge. While BAFTA, in recent memory, has solid history in predicting the eventual Oscar winners, it’s worth noting that last year they selected Boyhood as their Best Film while the Academy chose Iñárritu’s Birdman.
