It’s a great day for team The Revenant. Alejandro González Iñárritu’s sobering survivalist drama won five BAFTA awards earlier today (including Best Film) and received yet another honor from the American Society of Cinematographers to add to its trophy case as we come to the home stretch of the awards season. ASC honors the best achievement in cinematography and Emmanuel Lubezki’s work on The Revenant (considered an Oscar frontrunner) took top honors; the competition included Bridge of Spies, Carol, Mad Max: Fury Road and Sicaro– all but Bridge received a corresponding Oscar nomination (AMPAS selected The Hateful Eight instead).
Lubezki’s distinguished career has been marked with acclaimed collaborations from a tony group of filmmakers that include Terrence Malick, Tim Burton and Alfonso Cuarón. This is his third ASC victory in as many years (the other two films he was honored for were Gravity and Birdman). Lubezki (famously nicknamed Chivo) also took home Academy Awards for both movies; if wins the Oscar for The Revenant, he would be the only director of photography to win three consecutive awards.
Outside of the main category, ASC (now it’s 30th year of handing out prizes) handed out the Spotlight Award, honoring the best cinematography for features films that garnered either a limited theatrical release, a film festival debut or international attention.
