‘The Nun’ Dominates International Box Office With $16 Million

The Conjuring universe’s newest installation, The Nun, is continuing its reign at the top of the box office–this time, internationally.

The movie follows the story of a priest and his novitiate, who explore a death of a sister at a haunted castle in Romania, at the request of the Vatican. Within the abbey lies unholy spirits that strike them as they spend days investigating. Together with a French-Canadian farmer, they must work together to battle a demonic nun that creeps through the halls of the abbey.

The Nun accumulated $53.5 million during its opening weekend, which marks The Conjuring series’ best box office debut yet. With its release in both the United States and internationally, the film has now raked up $330 million, which makes it one of the most successful films in the series just next to Annabelle. The leading international markets that added an extra $16 million in box office records were Mexico and Brazil, according to Deadline.

The film is directed by Corin Hardy and marks his second directorial project to date. James Wan, who previously directed The Conjuring and Insidious, produced alongside Peter Safran, who worked with Wan on The Conjuring and Aquaman. American Horror Story’s Taissa Farmiga stars alongside Bonnie Aarons and Demián Bichir.
