‘The Flash’ Finds ‘Dope’ New Director

As Warner Bros. attempts to put the pieces together in their ambitious efforts to mount an extended DC Cinematic Universe, a hopeful bit of news came out today regarding the upcoming film version of The Flash. Previously, it was reported that Seth Grahame-Smith was stepping down as director on the project and now it appears replacement has been found in Rick Famuyiwa. Last year, Famuyiwa entranced critics with his comedy Dope, a hit at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival and just recently he directed the admired HBO movie Confirmation starring Kerry Washington.

Ezra Miller will star as the world’s fastest superhero (aka Barry Allen) in role that the actor debuted in a brief cameo in this spring’s Batman v Superman. (Confidentially, Miller has two potential big franchises upon him as he also co-stars in this fall’s Harry Potter spin-off Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.) Miller will also appear in Justice League: Part One. Grahame-Smith (Dark Shadows) penned the script for The Flash, itself based on a treatment written by The LEGO Movie filmmakers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (both of whom were initially pegged to direct The Flash before moving to the upcoming Han Solo standalone prequel for Lucasfilm).

According to Deadline, who broke the story, Warner Bros. was impressed with Famuyiwa’s vision for the story and either way it marks a huge benchmark for the filmmaker who up until now has helmed modestly scaled films in the past including Brown Sugar and The WoodThe Flash is expected to hit theaters on March 16, 2018.
