The First Purge, Blumhouse‘s latest installment in the politically charged Purge series, opened wide on the Fourth of July, bringing in $9.3 million at the North American box office. The newcomer takes the third spot in sales this week behind Universal‘s Jurassic Park: Fallen Kingdom, which earned $11.6 million on its 13th day of release, and Disney‘s Incredibles 2, which banked $9.7 million on its 20th day in the wild.
Before opening in 3,031 locations yesterday, pundits believed that The First Purge would reach $25 million after its first five days in theaters. After witnessing the turn out on opening day, it’s now possible that the film will achieve close to $35 million once Monday rolls around. Even though this film has exceeded initial expectations (and has a two-day head start), Marvel sequel Ant-Man and the Wasp will easily take the number one spot this weekend. Estimates for the superhero sequel’s opening weekend range anywhere from $75 million to $100 million.
The First Purge is the fourth film in a series which depicts an American society where, for only 12 hours on one day each year, all crime is legal, including murder. The newest edition of the series depicts the very first Purge as put together by “The New Founding Fathers,” and stars Y’lan Noel, Lex Scott Davis, Joivan Wade, Luna Lauren Velez, and Marisa Tomei.
The previous Purge film, The Purge: Election Year, started its opening weekend with $14.5 million and finished with a total of $31 million. The third film in the series totaled $79 million in North America and $118.5 million worldwide.
According to statistics from comScore, 2018’s North American Fourth of July movie-going surged 28.5% over last year, achieving $43.5 million in total sales. This is the biggest holiday tally since 2010’s $44 million, when Twilight Saga: Eclipse raked in $13.2 million.
