‘The Favourite’s Rachel Weisz to Portray Elizabeth Taylor in Upcoming Biopic

Rachel Weisz is signed on to play the iconic actress and activist Elizabeth Taylor in biopic by See-Saw Films titled A Special Relationship, which will be about Taylor’s life and eventual friendship with Roger Wall.

The film will be directed by duo Bert and Bertie from a screenplay by Academy Award-winner Simon Beaufoy, who wrote Slumdog Millionaire. See-Saw Films’ Iain Canning and Emile Sherman will produce while the trustees of the Elizabeth Taylor Estate/House of Taylor Trust, Barbara Berkowitz and Tim Mendelson, will join Simon Gillis and Danny Perkins in executive producing.

In addition to being an Academy Award-winning actress for her roles in 1960’s Butterfield 8 and 1966’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, as well as being nominated three other times, Taylor became an advocate for the LGBT community specifically during the AIDS crisis of the 1980s. Taylor first became active in the community in the mid-1980s when she grew close to her assistant, Roger Wall, a gay man who grew up in the homophobic South.

“Audiences are clearly fascinated by the private lives of iconic Hollywood stars. There is no one more iconic than Elizabeth Taylor, and Simon Beaufoy has written a role that shines a light on Elizabeth’s humor and humanity, which will be beautifully brought to life through the extraordinary talents of Rachel Weisz,” said Canning and Sherman of their project and star.

Rachel Weisz has won one Academy Award for her work on A Constant Gardener and was nominated earlier this year for her role in Yourgos Lanthimos’ The Favourite. The film has not yet found a distributor, so its release date is currently unknown. We’ll keep you posted.
