The Croods: A New Age has been performing consistently at the box office since its release, and this President’s Day weekend was no exception. In its twelfth week, the film earned over $2 million domestically and even beat out Warner Bros’ new critically acclaimed historical drama, Judas and the Black Messiah.
This is the first weekend The Croods has hit the no. 1 spot since early December, and even though the film has also been available on Premium VOD for months, it remains successful at theaters. The R-rated Judas and the Black Messiah, which earned exactly $2 million is also available to stream, so it’s possible that The Croods’ family-friendly rating is partially responsible for its continued success.
The Denzel Washington-led crime thriller The Little Things landed in third place earning $1.9 million, and Wonder Woman 1984 settled at the no. 4 spot with $1.3 million. All of the top earners from the last weekend are available to stream on VOD, and two of them (Judas and the Black Messiah & The Little Things) available to watch for free for HBO Max subscribers.
Meanwhile, China’s box office is booming. The release of the mystery caper Detective Chinatown 3 became the biggest opening weekend ever in a single market with $393 million, beating out Avengers: Endgame’s North American opening of $357 million.
