In a surprising weekend at the box office, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It has outperformed A Quiet Place Part II in the U.S. The newest entry in The Conjuring franchise earned $24 million in sales from over 3,100 venues in comparison to A Quiet Place Part II‘s $19.5 million from almost 3,750 theaters.
“This is another positive sign for the industry,” says head of the movie consulting firm Franchise Entertainment Research, David A. Gross. “Two similar movies on top of each other doing these numbers shows vibrancy in the market. It’s very good to see.”
Although the newest Conjuring film didn’t quite reach the heights of A Quiet Place Part II‘s opening weekend, it’s impressive that it was able to come out on top. The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It is available for free to HBO Max subscribers, while A Quiet Place Part II is only viewable in theaters. One would think this would mean that Conjuring fans would stay home to watch the new film and that more would show up to see A Quiet Place Part II in the theater, but it seems that horror fans are excited to return to the theatrical experience regardless of the film’s availability.
This is a promising sign for theaters, and with a slate of highly anticipated films set to release later this year, overall box office numbers should start to see a steady increase. Other films that performed well over the weekend include Cruella, which came in third place with $10.5 million. In fourth place was Spirited Untamed with $6.2 million; the film is the sequel to the 2002 animated film Spirit: Stallion of Cimarron. And finally, in fifth place was Guy Ritchie‘s newest action film starring Jason Statham, Wrath of Man, which earned $1.2 million.
