‘The Color Purple’ Makes Christmas Day History And Puts Up Strong Post-Holiday Showing

While 2023’s The Color Purple may be a reimagining of an old classic, it’s already breaking trends that other musicals fell into upon release. After just two days of circulation, the film brought its domestic total to $25 million.

Upon its Christmas Day release, The Color Purple made $18 million, making it the largest Christmas Day opening for a movie since 2009. It also lands it in the spot of the second-biggest Christmas Day opening ever.

As Variety points out, many recent musicals have had difficulty competing with other films at the box office. Cats, In The Heights, and even Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story all had trouble staying afloat, and while Color Purple is off to a promising start, it needs to hold on to the strong showing it’s put up to recoup its $100 million budget.

On Tuesday, Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom fell to second place after holding the top spot through the holiday weekend. It took in $8.3 million that day, falling short of Wonka’s $8.9 million. Warner Bros. held the domestic top three for the day, with Color Purple rounding out the trio at $7.1 million. Aquaman has made $46 million stateside so far, a steep drop from that of its 2018 predecessor. Wonka, however, has had a much better time at the box office, with $95.5 million domestically. The worldwide total for the film is up to $280 million, far exceeding its $100 million budget.

Animated flick Migration flew home fourth for the day with a $6.5 million total, a 22% jump from Christmas day. True story Boys In The Boat rowed to $3 million for its second day after coming out on Christmas Day alongside Color Purple. R-rated comedy Anyone But You brought in $2.61 million on Tuesday, 30% higher than its Christmas haul.
